Continuous Feature

Continuous Feature

This tip complies with ISO and ASME

When a group of two or more features of size has a common interface with a single feature of size it may be treated geometrically as a single feature of size.

Continuous Feature
Figure 1

In both cases the considered features interact with a single counter feature:

  • The two holes mate with a single pin
  • The piston four cylindrical features slid in a single Cylinder

The figures below illustrates a geometric specification to meet these requirements, in both standards:

Bottom Line

Geometric specifications (ASME GD&T and ISO GPS) are the tools to prescribe geometric variation limits to assure functionality of a manufactured part.

Standard Geometric Specifications allow us to specify even complex requirements in clear unambiguous manner, no need to “reinvent the wheel”.

In cases of uncertainty, consult an expert (save the time and cost of “reinventing the wheel”, misinterpretation, rework…)

Geometric Tolerances are a tool to map Functional Requirements to Geometric Limits
